Apple iOS 27 - 10 Settings You MUST Change on Launch

iOS 27: 10 Settings You Should Change After Updating Your iPhone

Apple's iOS 27 introduces a refined Liquid Glass design, new Apple Intelligence features, smarter Safari tools, and several new ways to customize your iPhone. While many features work automatically after the update, some settings are worth reviewing before you start using your iPhone normally.

In this guide, we'll look at 10 iOS 27 settings and features you should check after updating your iPhone. Some are customization options, while others can help you manage privacy, browsing, and notifications.

Note: Some iOS 27 features require a compatible iPhone, Apple Intelligence, or supported language and region. Certain features may also have usage limits.

1. Customize the Liquid Glass Look

One of the most visible changes in iOS 27 is the refined Liquid Glass design. Apple added a new control that lets you adjust the appearance of Liquid Glass from a more transparent look to a more tinted appearance.

To customize it, open Settings and go to Appearance. Look for the Liquid Glass controls and adjust the slider to your preferred appearance.

If you prefer a more transparent interface, move the slider toward the clearer option. If you want stronger contrast and a more solid appearance, move it toward the tinted option.

This setting is mainly about personal preference, so try both options and choose the one that is easier for you to read.

2. Set Up Full-Screen Widgets

iOS 27 gives you more flexibility when arranging content on the Home Screen. Larger widget layouts can make important information easier to see without opening an app.

To add or change a widget, touch and hold an empty area of your Home Screen until the apps begin to jiggle. Tap Edit, then choose Add Widget.

Choose a widget that supports the layout you want and add it to the Home Screen. You can then move it around to create a cleaner arrangement.

Large widgets are particularly useful for information such as weather, calendar events, reminders, battery status, or other frequently checked information.

3. Customize the Lock Screen

Your Lock Screen is one of the first things you see when you pick up your iPhone, so it is worth checking the available customization options after installing iOS 27.

Touch and hold your Lock Screen and tap Customize. Select Lock Screen and review the available layout, wallpaper, widget, and appearance options.

Choose a layout that keeps the information you actually need while avoiding unnecessary clutter.

If you prefer a minimal Lock Screen, use fewer widgets and a simpler wallpaper. If you rely on your Lock Screen for information, add only the widgets you check regularly.

4. Review the New Volume and Sound Options

After a major iOS update, it is a good idea to review your sound settings and make sure your iPhone behaves the way you expect.

Open Settings and tap Sounds & Haptics.

Here you can review your ringtone and alert volume, haptic feedback, and other sound-related options available on your iPhone.

Take a moment to adjust the settings based on how you normally use your phone. This is especially useful if you frequently switch between silent mode, media playback, calls, and notifications.

5. Set Up Siri AI and Apple Intelligence

iOS 27 introduces Siri AI with broader conversational capabilities and additional Apple Intelligence features. Apple says Siri AI can understand more natural requests and work with information across supported apps.

To review Siri settings, open Settings and tap Siri or the available Apple Intelligence and Siri section on your device.

Review the available options for activating Siri, responding to requests, and using Apple Intelligence.

Keep in mind that Siri AI requires a compatible Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone and supported language and region. Apple currently lists iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, as well as iPhone 16 models and later, among the supported devices for Siri AI on iOS 27.

Tip: If you don't see some Apple Intelligence features, check your iPhone model, language, region, and Apple Intelligence settings before assuming something is wrong.

6. Enable Automatic Safari Tab Grouping

If you regularly keep many Safari tabs open, this is one of the most useful iOS 27 features to check.

Safari can use Apple Intelligence to automatically organize open tabs into related topics. This makes it easier to find pages that belong to the same subject.

Open Safari and tap the Tabs button. Look for the Organize option and choose the automatic organization feature.

Safari can then suggest topics and group related tabs together. For example, pages about shopping, travel, news, or research can be organized into separate topics.

If you prefer to organize everything manually, you can also create your own Tab Groups.

7. Set Up Notify Me in Safari

Another useful Safari feature in iOS 27 is Notify Me. It can monitor a webpage for changes and notify you when something important changes.

For example, you may use it for a product page when you're waiting for an item to come back in stock or when you're monitoring a price change.

Open the webpage you want to monitor in Safari and look for the Notify Me option in the available page or tab controls.

Follow the on-screen instructions to set up the notification.

This can save you from repeatedly opening the same webpage just to check whether something has changed.

8. Enable Photo Ratings

If your iPhone contains thousands of photos, star ratings can make it easier to organize your best images.

Open the Photos app, go to Collections, and tap your Apple Account profile at the top. Look for Show Ratings Controls and turn it on.

You can then open a photo or video and give it a rating from one to five stars.

Later, you can filter your Photos library by rating to quickly find your favorite images.

This is especially useful if you regularly take multiple versions of the same photo and want an easier way to identify the best shots.

9. Review Location Sharing

Location access is another setting you should review after updating your iPhone.

Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.

You'll see a list of apps that have requested access to your location. Review the permissions and decide which apps actually need access.

For an app that doesn't need your exact location, you can turn off Precise Location while still allowing approximate location access when appropriate.

You can also change an app's permission to options such as Never, Ask Next Time Or When I Share, or While Using the App, depending on the available choices.

Privacy tip: Don't disable Location Services for every app automatically. Features such as Maps, Find My, and other location-based services may require location access to work correctly. Review permissions individually instead.

10. Turn Off Significant Locations & Routes

If you don't want your iPhone to maintain significant location and route information for personalized features, you can review this setting separately.

Go to:

Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services > Significant Locations & Routes

From here, you can turn the feature off.

Apple says significant locations and routes can be used to provide relevant information in apps such as Maps, Calendar, and Photos. Apple also states that this information is end-to-end encrypted and can't be read by Apple.

If you turn the feature off, some personalized location-based functionality may work differently.

Final Thoughts

iOS 27 adds a lot of new functionality, but you don't need to change every setting immediately. The best approach is to review the options and customize your iPhone based on how you actually use it.

The Liquid Glass controls can change the overall appearance, Safari can automatically organize related tabs and monitor webpages, Siri AI adds new Apple Intelligence capabilities, and the privacy settings give you more control over location access.

After updating to iOS 27, spend a few minutes going through these settings. You may discover useful features that aren't enabled or configured exactly the way you prefer.

Quick Checklist

  • Customize the Liquid Glass appearance
  • Set up larger Home Screen widgets
  • Customize your Lock Screen
  • Review sound and volume settings
  • Set up Siri AI and Apple Intelligence
  • Enable automatic Safari tab organization
  • Set up Safari Notify Me
  • Enable Photo Ratings
  • Review Location Services permissions
  • Review or disable Significant Locations & Routes
Important: iOS 27 features can vary by iPhone model, language, region, and Apple Intelligence availability. If a setting isn't visible on your iPhone, check Apple's current feature availability and your device configuration.
